One Room Challenge: The Reveal

We did it!

Holy bananas... 6 weeks flew by so fast, didn't they? Unreal. At the outset, 42 days to design a living and dining room seemed like a leisurely pace. But when you factor in shipping and coordinating two busy humans' schedules, it is quite the accomplishment to have transformed a space in this short of a period. But we DID IT!

Background:

If you found me through the One Room Challenge, welcome! In the last 6 weeks, I have been helping my friend Miranda spruce up her living and dining rooms. I actually had my doubts about finishing last week (when several key furnishings were delayed)... but by some miracle, it all came together. I give major props to Miranda, this girl can hustle!

Here's a quick before & after, or as I like to call it:

Let's recap where we started:

Newlyweds, Miranda and Taylor, live in this adorable craftsman in San Diego. We met through Instagram 6 months ago and thought we could join forces to update her space. Note: her space was pretty damn cute before, she just wanted to upgrade some items, infuse the space with their personality, and accommodate their kitty, Nova (who likes to scratch furniture... oops). Check out our weekly updates here: Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4, Week 5.

This was our inspiration mood board that was informing our decisions along the way:

Here's what went right:

Furniture selection was a breeze. After Miranda and I narrowed down a few selections for the sofa, coffee table, and lighting, she was decisive and quick to pull the trigger! My kind of woman. Rugs were a big risk... in both cases for dining and living rooms, we bought rugs sight unseen (eek). We ordered the dining rug directly from Morocco (yaaaas!) and the other was a preemptive purchase. This Anthro rug was on sale and in low stock, so I just bought it, hoping that Miranda would go for it... and she did. Phew! Here's the final living room design board:

And here is what it looks like in real life!

Then the dining room, here's the concept we decided on:

Here's what it looks like in person:

While most of the items we purchased were sourced online, Taylor infused a little more boho edge into the space with this uh-mazing chair he found on OfferUp for a steal! It is in great condition, and fit so perfectly in this corner as a little reading nook, don't you agree?!

Cheers!

Finally, the bar area needed a little love... we found this sleek bar cart and dressed it up... doesn't it make you want to mix a cocktail and hang out with Miranda and Taylor? When I saw it in person, I was ready to make a bloody Mary on the spot.

Budget

This is an area that usually doesn't go so well. Oftentimes, a client will fall in love with an item that's 3-times your budget, and then it's a domino effect. I'm happy to say we did really well in this area. Everything we got was on sale and nothing felt like a compromise. I consider this a big WIN.

Here's what didn't go right, ahem:

Shipping... oh shipping! I've been in this long enough to expect 20% of shipped items to have some sort of issue... damage, below expectations, late... but it felt like everything we ordered came with a challenge (or just plain arrived late). The dining table arrived late, damaged and the WRONG SIZE! That's a triple whammy! What was supposed to be 40" round arrived as 36" so it's completely disproportional with the chairs, but we'll get it replaced.

The other obstacle we faced was the dreaded landlord involvement... when you're renting, it's difficult to get buy-in from a landlord to spend money on decorative items like window coverings or paint. At the end of the day, it's their property, so we made do with what we had and left the blinds alone.

This final obstacle was one we did overcome. Miranda and Taylor's pet kitty, Nova, is a scratcher... a sofa scratcher. So when we were in the process of selecting furniture, we had to keep Nova in mind. Luckily, we were able to find a sofa, coffee table, and dining chairs that have wood legs, so she couldn't scratch and ruin any fabric. So far, she seems to approve!

Thank you!

We want to thank the OneRoomChallenge team for hosting this event to allow designers to showcase their work. We were in the company of many talented teams and were so encouraged by the design community. If you're ever thinking of tackling a room design, take a look at the hundreds of success stories that have come through the ORC and you'll find lots of inspiration!

I'm personally so excited to have participated, and have a huge list of take-aways (but that's for another day). For now, click below to see the completed projects by the other guest participants! One Room Challenge

 xoxo,

Neen
